University of Tartu to Host the 38th European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information in 2027

The University of Tartu will welcome hundreds of students, researchers and academics from around the world in 2027 as it hosts the European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (ESSLLI) for the first time in Estonia.

Founded in 1989, ESSLLI is a two-week annual summer school dedicated to exploring the intersection of linguistics, logic, and computation. Over nearly four decades, it has become one of the leading international events in these fields, bringing together experts and emerging researchers to exchange ideas and foster interdisciplinary collaboration.

Each year, ESSLLI offers approximately 50 courses at foundational, introductory, and advanced levels, attracting around 300 participants from across the globe. The curriculum spans three core themes: Language and Computation, Language and Logic, and Logic and Computation. In addition to the courses, the programme includes workshops that provide opportunities for in-depth discussion of current developments and emerging topics.

A hallmark of the summer school is its public evening lecture series, featuring four lectures delivered by distinguished professors. Since 2018, one of these has been the Dick Oehrle Memorial Lecture, established to honour the contributions and intellectual legacy of Dick Oehrle. The lecture is supported by the Dick Oehrle Endowment in collaboration with the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) and the Association for Logic, Language and Information (FoLLI).

Another key feature of ESSLLI is the Student Session, which is organised entirely by students. The session offers participants the opportunity to present their research, receive expert feedback, publish their work in a Springer proceedings volume, and compete for awards recognising the best student papers and posters.

Registration for ESSLLI will open in spring 2027. Meanwhile, the call for course and workshop proposals is now open, inviting lecturers and researchers from around the world to contribute to the programme. By 1 October 2026, applicants are asked to submit the names of the instructor(s), indicate the relevant ESSLLI area and course level, and provide a course title and short abstract. The submission must be completed by 15 October 2026 at https://easychair.org/cfp/ESSLLI27.

The 2027 edition will be co-organised by the the University of Tartu Centre for Digital Humanities, the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science, and the Institute of the Estonian Language (EKI). The main organizer of the event in Tartu is Joshua Wilbur (Lecturer in Digital Linguistics at the University of Tartu). The program Committe is headed by Michael Benedikt (Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford) and Danel Ahman (Associate Professor of Programming Languages at the University of Tartu).

Hosting ESSLLI marks an important milestone for the academic community in Tartu, highlighting University of Tartu’s growing role in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of language technologies, artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, and formal logic. The event is expected to strengthen international research collaboration while showcasing Tartu as a centre of excellence in digital humanities and language technology.
