Dr. Nikhil Mahant lecture on dogmas of AI doomsayers
On March 3 at 16:15, at Delta building, room 1008 (Narva mnt 18), Dr. Nikhil Mahant will deliver a talk titled “Two Dogmas of AI Doomsayers”. The lecture can also be followed live via Zoom. Dr. Nikhil Mahant is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellow at Uppsala University and is currently a resident at Susimetsa Philosophicum.

Record amount of digital waste was deleted during the university’s Digital Cleanup Month
This year’s digital cleanup campaign at the university lasted for almost an entire month. In total, university members freed up 4,313 GB of space on their devices and discarded 93.5 kg of old external data carriers.

Led by the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Centre for Sustainable Development of the University of Tartu, a guidance material has been developed for researchers on how to conduct interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research.

Starting Monday, you can study at night in the library once again
The first week of the traditional night library will take place this year from 9 to 13 December, when students can study in the library until midnight. In January, you can visit the night library for three weeks.

On 29 October, the University of Tartu and the Estonian National Museum signed a framework agreement for industrial doctorate studies to support the education of future researchers for the museum and intensify cooperation between the two institutions.

European Commission funds new research centre for digital text scholarship
The Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics of the University of Tartu has been granted funding from the European Commission through the Horizon Europe ERA-Chair instrument to launch the Center for Digital Text Scholarship (DigiTS) starting in March 2025.
This year’s recipients of honorary decorations have been announced
On 25 October, the University of Tartu senate decided to award the University of Tartu Grand Medal to Professor of International Business Urmas Varblane. Also, the recipients of the University of Tartu Star of Appreciation, Medal, Badge of Distinction and the decoration “100 Semesters at the University of Tartu” have been announced.

Information Technology Office invites you to try the IT helpdesk virtual assistant
Starting from 16 August, all staff and students of the university will be able to test the virtual assistant on the University of Tartu IT wiki page, which will provide support in solving IT problems based on existing guides. The trial period will last a couple of months, during which the Information Technology Office will be able to assess the quality of the virtual assistant service.
